Alfie Hewett retains US Open wheelchair singles crown

Alfie Hewett retained the US Open wheelchair singles crown .

The 21-year-old out of Norwich edged a tight first set following a tie-break outside.
He led 4-1 in the second set but had been pegged back by Houdet prior to taking another tie-break to complete a 7-6 (11-9) 7-6 (7-5) victory.
Hewett stated:”I was frustrated not to be about a larger court, but I’ve never dropped on this court so thank you to whoever made that choice.
“Thanks to everybody back home, it is great to win and to defend the title.”
Another title was claimed by hewett with the Gordon Reid, the British duo coming from a set down to beat Gustavo Fernandez and Shingo Kunieda 11-9 at a game tie-break of Scotland in the doubles.
Meanwhile, Eastcote’s Andy Lapthorne won the wheelchair quad singles with a victory. Lapthorne, who dropped to Australian Alcott in the Wimbledon final of this year, won 6-1 to grow his 2014 US Open victory.
Lapthorne and Alcott subsequently joined to win the doubles final, 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 10-6 following a game tie-break from American group Bryan Barton and David Wagner.
