Chair umpire Carlos Ramos will not work US Open matches that have Serena or Venus Williams
(CNN) — Carlos Ramos won’t function as chair umpire for almost any Serena Williams or even Venus Williams matches in the 2019 US Open, also a United States Tennis Association spokesman told CNN on Wednesday.
Ramos has been the chair umpire for last year’s volatile US Open women’s singles final between Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams. A Osaka awakens against her idol 6-2 to win her first major, but controversy overshadowed it.
Serena Williams battled with Ramos, culminating when he docked a match for calling him a”thief.” Around Arthur Ashe Stadium, while the trophy was accepted by Osaka, boos rang after the match. Osaka wept.
Both players have suffered from injuries but stay in the singles draw of the united states Open women. Osaka, now the top-ranked player on earth, will have the No. 1 seed. Serena Williams is eighth. Venus Williams is unseeded.
Whilst play is scheduled to start, the draw will be announced on Thursday.
Earlier this season, Serena Williams has been forced to retire in the Rogers Cup in Toronto after four matches from the Bianca Andreescu because of back problem of Canada. The injury kept her out of tournament action in the Southern & Western Open in the Cincinnati suburb of Mason, Ohio, a week.
Meanwhile, the Osaka retired through her match, at the quarterfinals of Cincinnati because of a knee injury.
Osaka and Serena Williams have performed since that infamous game.
Is seeking her first as the 2017 Australian Open, when she had been pregnant, along with a record 24th big singles title, tying her Margaret Court for the most time. That win came from Venus Williams.
Osaka, the very first player to acquire a major singles title, inserted a second grand slam trophy this season when she won the Australian Open.
