Sam Burgess out of Great Britain tour with shoulder injury
Sam Burgess Was ruled out of This Great Britain Excursion to Papua New Guinea and New Zealand.
A month the 30-year-old suffered a recurrence of a shoulder injury in the NRL semi-final defeat of his club to Canberra Raiders and can be set to undergo operation.
The reduction of Burgess, who made his Great Britain debut within an 18-year-old against the Kiwis is a significant setback to get Wayne Bennetts group as they prepare to set out on the Lions tour for 23 decades.
Rugby Football League rugby director Kevin Sinfield said on Tuesday:We made it confirmed this morning that Sam Burgess will be out of the excursion sadly.
It is very disappointing. He has had a continuing problem with his shoulder which will require surgery. He gutted, as are we all.
Weve seen how special its to all of our players, Sam having been among those chosen few previously whove worn the shirt and did outstandingly well in it.
Hes a leader and a true major role in this dressing room and in the area hes world class so well certainly miss him.
Itll provide someone else having the opportunity and they could grab it
The RFL announced a 16-man England squad to the World Cup Nines.
That squad will be boosted by other NRL-based players and agents from Saturdays Grand Final between St Helens and Salford before it is announced on Monday.
One of the forwards on stand-by is Castleford prop Liam Watts, but Sinfield stated:Theres still a whole lot to be determined.
You would expect a massive determined to be involved in the Grand Final at the weekend and well piece everything together on Sunday morning.
We have a great idea of where were at and Wayne is completely across all. We have had six selectors hard at work pulling squads together, it is possibly the most rigorous selection procedure we have ever had.
Sinfield verified that former Leeds centre Kallum Watkins, currently with Gold Coast Titans, was not chosen because of a rib injury as well as a last decision has not yet been created about the fitness of Wigan loose forward Sean OLoughlin, who is predicted to be named Lions captain.
Meanwhile, Sinfield says newly-crowned Man of Steel Jackson Hastings is in contention.
The Salford half-back was born in Australia but, like Warrington stand-off Blake Austin, has an English grandparent and he lodged papers to prove his qualification a week past.
We would have liked to get it confirmed a little bit sooner, especially once you believe how quick Blake was, Sinfield stated.
But we understand where Jackson was and now hes in contention like everyone else.
Its a pity he has missed a number of the sessions we conducted throughout the year but, by my experience of spending a bit of time with himhes a quite a sociable lad who will fit into many dressing rooms.
